The opening ceremony of Herrenstein wind farm

Sunday, 1 October 2017

After successfully commissioning the largest alpine wind farm at the beginning of August 2017, we hosted the opening ceremony of the Herrenstein wind farm on 1 October 2017.

Johann Ziegerhofer, Mayor of Rettenegg commune, and Hans Janker, Managing Director of ECOwind, were delighted to see some 1000 guests attend the official opening ceremony of the Herrenstein wind farm – including two members of the provincial parliament, Bernhard Ederer and Wolfgang Dolesch, and Deputy Mayor of Waldbach-Mönichwald, Arrigo Kurz.

The opening ceremony started at 10 o′clock with a religious mass on the mountainside, followed by the benediction of each wind turbine. While the local music society, Ortsmusik Rettenegg, the band die rustige 7 and the Schuhplattler from Neudau provided musical entertainment, visitors were able to go up almost all the way up to the turbine’s hub (a height of 94 m) in a crane basket. Those who wanted to enjoy a view of the wind farm from higher up could take to the skies in a helicopter. Besides the ‘Wilder Wind’ children′s programme, visitors could also prove their skills in the traditional ‘bolt-throwing contest’ – a competition held throughout Austria.

The Herrenstein wind farm has six turbines with a total output of just under 20 MW and an annual production of approximately 45,000 megawatt hours of green electricity. It supplies around 15,000 households with clean electricity and saves approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO2.

Since there is a consolidation of wind power suppliers in Styria, construction of the wind farm has added value of the region, enabling it to benefit from the Herrenstein site.
