Planning & installation

of wind farms

The idea of supplying our own farm with energy from a wind turbine led to the founding of ECOwind in 1995.

With a capacity of 250 kW, a 40-metre-high tower and a rotor diameter of 33 m, this was the fifth and (at the time) largest wind turbine in Austria – and testimony to ECOwind’s pioneering position in the field of wind energy. As the power of the wind turbines increased, ECOwind also evolved from a local wind turbine supplier to the company it is today: project developer and general contractor operating throughout central south-eastern Europe.

A portfolio of exceptionally demanding projects

When the company completed the Styrian Steinriegel wind farm in 2005 – which at 1,500 metres above sea level was the highest Alpine wind park in Europe at the time – the company passed another milestone along its path to success.

Overcoming a myriad of logistical challenges during installation and ensuring efficient operational management despite extreme weather conditions, we were able to make a name for ourselves as an experienced and competent partner within the Austrian wind industry.

Expanding beyond Austria

In 2008, ECOwind seized an opportunity in Hungary and installed their first wind farm outside Austria.

Encouraged by these positive experiences, ECOwind expanded into other EEC countries. In order to ensure that we manage project development efficiently and respond to the specific requirements of individual countries, we established subsidiaries in Croatia, Romania and Poland.

ECOwind was integrated into the German company BayWa renewable energy GmbH in 2011. This ensures that our expertise is strengthened by synergies with other members of the Group, so that we can continue to drive our company successfully forward for the benefit of our project partners.
