The strong wind in January 2024 set several records in electricity production. According to IG Windkraft, a total of 20.7 per cent of electricity consumption was covered by wind power in January. This is a new record and 53 per cent above the average of the last five years.
The wind kicked off the record series on 7 January with an electricity production of 75 GWh, meaning that just over half of electricity consumption was covered by wind energy. The following day, the first record was already history again. With electricity generation of 77.3 GWh and a wind power share of around 41 per cent of electricity consumption, Austria was in first place in a European country comparison, ahead of Ireland and Germany.
All good things come in threes, thought the wind in January and set the third record in a very short space of time on 25 January with the generation of 78.6 GWh of wind power. This meant that an impressive total of 1,148 GWh of wind power was generated.
Wind power produces two thirds of electricity in the winter months and will become increasingly important in the future, as electricity consumption will more than double. Especially in winter, when less electricity can be produced from the power of the sun and water, wind power plays an important role in renewable energies.
